God is in control…

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21

Well, today we were reminded of who is really in control of this precious gift we have given the name of Isaac. It is amazing how quickly we can be thrust into total reliance of life and death and are at the mercy of who is really in control and all of those around us who plead on our behalf at God’s very throne for mercy and grace.

Early this morning as I (Kevin) was getting briefed by Isaac’s night nurse, Isaac began showing signs that something was wrong…in a matter of minutes he went from a wriggling baby to limp and barely responsive. In a flurry of activity we went through our emergency protocol while we waited for medical personnel to arrive. The emotions and adrenaline rush of having to “bag” (do CPR) on your own child is something that one can never really prepare for.

We had a flood of thoughts going through our heads as I was with Isaac in the back of the ambulance speeding toward the hospital and Theresa stayed home to formulate what we call the  “crisis mode” plan of care for the rest of the kids. Stroke? Respiratory failure? Seizure?

As we let the word out to pray for Isaac, we were comforted and supported by all of you who sent us words of encouragment…I hope you know just how pivotal you all are in this little miracle.

What we know as of now is that he is stable, comfortable and has been sleeping all day…and now into the night. Isaac has had a series of seizures that is believed to have been brought on by a sodium deficiency. His levels of sodium reached way below what would be labeled as critical. We believe by your prayer that we saw the fingerprints of God…again. Another example of who really is in control of this little guy. We now reside in the Pediatric ICU, yet another floor we have visited in this wonderful hospital we are so grateful to have in our own back yard, Devos Children’s Hospital. We are likely to stay for the next several days until we are able to fully understand and have a plan to make sure this does not happen again. We are not completely “out of the woods” as of yet and still have more questions to be answered than have been answered.

We are grateful for the safe return of Hannah, who experienced amazing things while serving with a team in Africa. We are grateful for Megan, who served the family and played big sister and helper with Sarah Anne and Matthew while we were “down one.” We are grateful for Matthew and Sarah Anne who are completely familiar with our new normal in our home and have taken it in stride. We are grateful for the community that we not only worship with, but I have the privilege to serve and provide for our family. We do not take for granted one single minute the flexibility, understanding and tremendous support that they have consistently provided over the last 3 and a half months.
